Was excited to find that the new Homes And Gardens Magazine has included three of my feature stories. For all of us obsessed with interiors and design ts quite a good read and starts with a great article on The Block stars, Alisa and Lysandra. In fact there are not many ad pages so it really is worth the cover price of $9.95.
One of my favourite stories on the Queenslander in inner city Brisbane is there, plus the hot pink Culburra Beach house called Gidget. The garden story on the Yellow House in Nowra tells the story of how Mim and Ned Burkett transformed their small town block into a productive edible garden.
As always, great photos from Simon Kenny at Content Agency.
Ever had a dream of buying an old historic home and doing it up? This post is for you... and me!
For those in Australia, you can catch a re-run of UK renovation guru Sarah Beeny's own nightmare project, the restoration of a huge historic home in Yorkshire, now on ABC's iView.
The three part series captures every twist and turn in the 8-month renovation of this 200 year old house, Rise Hall.
I love that the show captures all the stress, decision panic and hard graft of this enormous and ambitious venture in the race to get it ready for a wedding deadline that cannot be moved back.
You can see more of Rise Hall at http://www.risehall.com
The contestants are frantically stripping out the termite-infested northern beaches home of Michelle and Steve and we are looking forward to seeing some "Beach House" style in the big reveal.

Some things that have been niggling about the previous Brisbane house. When I thought about what I would have done with that house there would have been some fundamental differences:
Firstly I would have made the decks much bigger and put a DA in to wrap the veranda around the side.

What were they thinking putting modern double glass doors from the front porch to the master bedroom? Talk about a fishbowl. The doors would have worked if they had used a more traditional french door which has only the top panel glazed.
The ensuite, though nicely done, looked like it belonged in a project home. The other team got the traditional details pretty spot on in the main bathroom.

There is so much stuff to look at style wise, both in magazines and on the web, I wonder why these contestants don't do some research.
The kitchen, as I've mentioned, was great but the pokey little deck out the back barely fit a table for two.

With the beach house I think there will be fewer "style" slip-ups but the brothers who were asked to do Morroccan tiles in the bathroom have got the wrong idea here. Once again, if they had just Googled "Morroccan tiles" they would have seen that what they have chosen is completely wrong.

On prime time TV here there are two house renovation shows vying for the limelight.
On My House Rules the teams are renovating a very plain house in Brisbane that aspires to be a Queenslander. Easy. You would think...
Most of the teams didn't seem to know what a Queenslander was. The big reveal is tonight and already I shudder to think what might be. We have already seen the modern pivoting front door which is totally wrong for a Queenslander and modern battening also wrong for the style.
However, the glimpses of the kitchen we have seen look spot-on.
There are lots of things that surprise me about living in the country. I will always be a "blow-in" as we call it here in Australia, no matter what. They say it takes at least 20 years before the born and bred country folk might consider you an honorary local. This is not such a big deal most of the time and there have been some breakthroughs.
Being invited to the Pyree Ball - the local farming community's annual knees-up, is a definite sign that you are on the road to being accepted.
Sharing my farm-grown produce, like the huge blue pumpkins modeled by my daughter above, gives me street cred.
Does anyone have any tricks for winning over the locals?catherine shieldshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10535824774062036043noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7262742140211948230.post-77652463325056186312013-05-11T08:45:00.001+10:002013-05-11T08:45:50.889+10:00Country Roads

You know you are in the country when....
A neighbour arrives for dinner on a crisp autumn night on horseback, leading another horse he is breaking in. Both horses spent the duration of the evening hitched to the front fence occasionally whinnying to their friends 1km down the lane.
Wow... for a city girl like me.

I am working on a look book for a someone who is building a big Hamptons-style beach house. I have some gorgeous inspirational images but would love some more.

The Grayson mansion on the TV show "Revenge" is pretty much it, but it doesn't really exist!
The dramatic double-height entrance hall to the shingled turrets - the stuff of dreams.

The other all-time favourite is the Hamptons house in the movie "Something's Gotta Give", where Diane Keaton lived.
What is your favourite image?

Just couldn't resist taking some photos of the incredible autumn flowers blooming in my garden at the moment. The apple in the photo is to show how big they are.

These Dahlias were only planted in the past year so I'm quite chuffed they have done so well, even though it was quite a difficult summer.

They survived a very dry December followed by storms and the edge of a small tornado which hit our region some weeks back. Luckily we just caught the edge of it but our neighbours down the lane lost about six huge trees.

Dahlias make for wonderfully colourful flower arrangements and the vivid colours brighten up any room. I bought these Dahlia bulbs online from Garden Express and can recommend them!
I have a new space for my home office which looks pretty sad, I'm sorry to say. I need some inspiration!
It is also a storeroom for all my house props so this will be a big challenge to bring it all into line.
I have an antique desk which I've had since school, but it either needs to go or be re-painted a happy colour.
The walls also need a paint so I might inject some colour - or wallpaper - here too. Its the one space in the house that is just mine and mine alone. I had never realised that until just now so that means I can paint it whatever colour I like!
Here are some of the must-have elements:
- a vintage desk with some personality, painted white or a bold colour
- an over-sized pinboard
- a stylish chair (no black vinyl swivels for me)
- great light fitting
- cool table/desk lamp
- heaps of attractive storage
- a graphic rug

What would your ideal home office look like? Chic and sleek or stylishly eclectic?
Over the next few weeks I am going to post glimpses of my own farmhouse which is still a work in progress. We have been working on it, be it in bits of time here and there, for the last few months.

Here is my cat Mini making herself at home in the church hall. The grey walls are Dulux "Timeless Grey" and the trim "White On White". The window is a reclaimed window we had in the shed that matched the originals fairly closely.

The floors are the original hardwood which we did not have time to sand and finish before moving in for Christmas so we left them raw. We quite like the unfinished boards and we are considering what techniques we can apply that will give them a finish but keep that raw look.

Any suggestions? catherine shieldshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10535824774062036043noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7262742140211948230.post-4349961287758790082013-03-15T07:04:00.001+11:002013-03-15T07:04:16.140+11:00Re-Thinking The Way I Live

Well it has been an extended blog-cation over the busy tourist season, but I'm back with more inspiration and ideas to share and there are a few house stories coming out in the glossies too.

Next on my list of things to find is a new desk for my kitchen. Yes, that's right, I have decided to install a desk in my kitchen as I'm always in there anyway!

This idea was re-affirmed by a book I received at Christmas, "Re-Think The Way You Live" by former UK Elle Decoration writer and stylist, Amanda Talbot. Amanda, who is now a Sydneysider, writes frankly about how she fell "out of love" with glossies when the effects of the Global Financial Crisis started to hit home.

All of a sudden many people she knew no longer had the cushion of a well-paid, glamorous job, if they had one at all. Although the priority often became finding the next rent or mortgage payment, the design gene never got completely suppressed - it just morphed into a new, more "real" attitude about interiors and a more inventive approach to how we live in them.

One of my favourite chapters is about a Japanese family and their quirky box-like living quarters, shown above. Having lived in Japan myself I would have to say that the Japanese are no strangers to small spaces and have been living like this for centuries and have made it into an art form like everything else.

"Re-Think" is a tactile journey to houses on different continents which share in this new wave of resourceful style. It resonates with many of us who feel the responsibilities of making sustainable design choices but never want to - or could ever give up - creative expression in our surroundings.

Turning the pages is a sensual experience thanks to the thoughtful design of a former colleague Kate Dennis at Ikon. Great job, Kate and congratulations to Tracy Lines and Murdoch Books for taking a punt on such an a-typical interiors book.

A decade ago I can remember talking to a real estate agent about the colours people paint their houses. We were looking at a house that had been painted a very daring and dark battleship grey and he said "thats just a fad - it will be over by next year."

Well all shades of grey are still very much "in". In fact I am sitting here with four sample pots in varying shades of grey trying to work out which one will work for my church hall interior.

Why not paint it white, I can hear some of you saying. Well the walls are lined in very old cedar boards with plenty of imperfections so a darker colour will not highlight the nicks and wobbles as much. The vast pitched ceiling is painted a bright white (Dulux White On White) with big exposed wooden trusses.

The very deep skirting boards, which I am loving, and chunky architraves are also being painted a crisp white. As the room is so huge we decided that it could take some colour.

Where to buy Cast Iron Beds?

I did a post on this look some months back and keep getting queries from readers about where they can get that traditional cast iron bed look.
I bought my single beds from Forty Winks (now Home Zone). They look great and I'll post a shot soon - they are currently at one of the beach cottages.
Freedom now do a reasonably priced version, as do Ikea.
I have included photos.

Purists will poo-poo theses knock-off versions but the original ones are usually odd sizes and need work. Believe me, I have a stunning iron bed in pieces in storage as I have to get a custom mattress made for it and fix it up a bit. It will probably remain in storage while my Forty Winks beds are solid, well made and look great!
I'm heading up to Brisbane to photograph some gorgeous houses (with
one of Australia's top photographers) for the glossies this week... and I
have space for one more!

If you think your house, or a friend's, is worthy of a magazine story, send me some photos as quick as you can.
What we are looking for:
A house with style that has lots of decorating ideas with a high level of finish. It can be modern, traditional, funky or glam.
We also look for at least 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, a kitchen, living area, dining plus an outdoor area if appropriate.
It has to be in the Brisbane area.
Send your pics to me at:

Every year I look forward to creating a new decorating theme for Christmas. Last year I did a simple but chic grey, red and white scheme. My mother and I really get into this and whoever hosts Christmas lunch gets to choose a colour scheme for the big family gathering.

This year its my turn. I am having all my family to lunch in my not-quite-finished church hall so getting the kitchen cupboards and walls painted will probably come right down to the wire. Nothing like a deadline to get your renovation done...

Living in the country, as I do, there is not a lot of tasteful festive stuff available in stores so one is forced to fall back on ones own craft skills and what is available at local chain stores. This year it is looking like I will be going with a more bold and un-traditional colour scheme of hot pink and red, with a dash of gold.
About a year ago I found the most fabulous 60s peacock chair in my favourite second hand store. It is more like a flower than a peacock and looks right at home in one of my retro beach cottages (which are holiday rentals BTW). It was a little scruffy but it was transformed with a coat of coral pink/orange and just love the way it adds a touch of bohemian style to the room.
Another cool example is in the former home of Ivy and Piper's Melanie Parker, who we did a story on for Real Living Magazine last year. Her fab yellow chair was an old one, revamped by Brisbane's Black and Spiro.

I have two more smaller peacock armchairs rescued from the "tip" pile in my mother's garage. They are destined for my new screened porch but need a coat of paint and new fabric on the cushions to modernise them.
This post is for my husband who just LOVES re-invented industrial buildings.

By Dutch architects Zecc, this water tower in Soest, Netherlands, is a nine floor folly of phallic proportions!
Favourite design ideas:
1: Colours: the monochrome palette echos the industrial heritage.
2: The black stairs in the all-white stair walls
3: The glass insert on the lower floors that illuminates the stairwell.

This amazing design project by Zecc Architects in Utrecht, Netherlands, saw the complete remodeling of the interior of a church to become a contemporary home.
This church is much more gothic than ours, and the renovation much more full-on, but I couldn't resist posting it. (Our church is much more "Shaker" - a simple wooden building.)

Favourite design ideas:
1: the over-the-top chandeliers in the bathroom and main living area. They add a bit of religious drama and sense of occasion to the spaces.

2: Colour: The contrast of the all-white main interiors with the charcoal bathroom.

3: Stairway to heaven: Love the floating stair leading up to the bedroom in the heavens above!
Local Berry restrauteurs, Dave and Nicole Campbell have opened Wharf Rd in the old boatshed overlooking the Shoalhaven River and bridge. (Dave owns Hungry Deck in Berry and worked with Tetsuya in Sydney.
The interiors were done with the help of local designer Bec Riles, my former neighbour, who now owns Roots and Wings boutique in Berry.
The Campbells have refurbished the entire building, adding some seaside chic with the blonde wood and white nautical-inspired fit out.
I believe the food isn't bad, either!
If you live in Sydney, Canberra or the Highlands, why not book a weekend
away in one of our beachfront houses - and enjoy a night out at Wharf
Rd?
Nevertheless, I really love its style- I think its a perfect fit for the beach, country or city for that matter. I posted some of these photos a while back and it has been one of my most popular posts.
I came across it again while looking for stone fireplaces as I have a pile of huge sandstone blocks ready to be cut. I also am planning some detail for a screened porch which is yet to be built, so this place really has it all for me!
Renovations at my own house are starting to move along (again) and I am getting ready to do up my daughter's bedroom.

There is plenty of decorating material available for small children's bedrooms but once they get past about 7 years old they are growing out of "cute".

We are facing a challenge. She is not old enough for more a sophisticated look but doesn't want bunnies and teddies. or cutesey icons either. She does love flowers and gardens so I think we will go with that.

There is an exposed brick chimney which is right in the middle of the room which, instead of plastering, I think I'll get the carpenters to sheet up so I can make it into a wallpapered feature.
I am a huge fan of the way Designers Guild use colour and pattern so I thought I'd share my inspiration board with you.
I love the eclectic mix of old and modern furniture.
As far as colours go, I think I will be going for pink and orange, with accents of purple and green. Sounds a bit garish doesnt it?
Does anyone have any tips for decorating a tween bedroom?
Don't get me wrong, when the mood takes me I can go shopping and spend some serious money. But more often than not I find its not always necessary to spend top dollar and I love finding good deals and inexpensive but stylish discoveries in unexpected places.
Its all part of that thrill of discovering a bargain. Who doesn't love it?

Here are some of my tips:
Jump On It:
Sales can pop up when you least expect them and when you're not ready. If you see something you absolutely LOVE and its on sale at an incredible price, think seriously about buying it.

Someone who was demolishing an old house some months back asked my husband if he wanted some of the old windows as they were going to the tip otherwise. He jumped at the chance even though he didn't think he could use them at the time and storing them was inconvenient. Sure enough they have come in handy on a project we are working on now. It saved us something like $10,000 in joinery costs.

Top: Some of my bargain buys - stools at The Reject Shop

Go Mass Market:
If you are a regular reader you'll know I have mentioned this before...
I am not a fan of cheap, mass-produced tat but I do love going to places like Ikea, ideally with my husband who has an eagle eye. I like to have a really good look around, searching through the crowded bins as well as standing back and looking at the big view. Sometimes you miss things if you are just looking at eye level or up close.
In the overwhelming sea of mass-produced STUFF you can find some great quality decorating items - these are some of my favourites:
- slip covers in a variety of sturdy cotton fabrics
- feather cushion inserts
- loose cushion covers in plain colours or bold patterns
- inexpensive but stylish light fittings
- linen/cotton mix curtains
- christmas decorations, festive table-top ideas

For my beach houses sometimes I even look in those kitch beachy shops or $2 stores and on the odd occasion I actually do find something. (Which reminds me of something I found the other day in the Reject Shop which I will post).
I also keep an eye on the racks of K-Mart, Target, Spotlight and even Aldi.

I recently found some fabulous upholstery fabric on the sale rack at Spotlight. It cost me $8 per metre and it was 2m wide. I had some old chairs covered in it and they look a million dollars!

Bargain Karma - Garage Sales, Recycling Centres, Second-hand Stores, Online:
This is a pretty obvious bargain source but I find the trick is, make your visits random. Whenever I'm looking for something in very particular, it just wont find me. When I'm not "looking" I find great things. Go figure?
If you are driving past a second hand store and something catches your eye, stop. If you are looking for something, ask the salesperson as more often than not they have lots of stuff out the back and "it" might be there.
Then there is the plethora of stuff you can find online on sites like Ebay, Gumtree etc. To be perfectly honest I don't often find things this way but I know others do. My friend L has recently turned an unused veranda off her bedroom into a walk-in closet and moved her bed back into the alcove that formerly housed the wardrobe cupboards, minus the doors.
She loves all things French and has chosen a lovely colour combination of palest green and linen taupe for the room but is stuck on how to proceed to bring the room together.

My first step to get any project moving is to look for inspiration. Both the bedrooms I have shown here are by Brisbane decorator and store owner, Melinda Boundy from Lily G. Melinda's own bedroom, above, is a similar colour scheme to L's and in this case the starting point was the fabric she loved.
The second bedroom was designed for a client of Melinda's and the starting point was the gorgeous wallpaper, "Emperor's Garden" by GP & J Baker. The colour combination was again, taupe plus french blue found in the wallpaper, mainly used in accents like the lamp bases and scatter cushions.

What makes both these bedrooms work is the use of eclectic elements such as mis-matched bedside tables, layers of different fabric textures and just one central area of pattern, namely the fabric headboard in Bed #1 and the wallpapered wall in Bed #2.

The injection of personality comes from the antique furniture and accessories such as the daybed in Bed #2. Some of the items are inexpensive reproductions, some are the real thing, but they have been cleverly mixed together.

For my friend L, I would suggest she wallpaper the alcove behind the bed, or if she is feeling more adventurous, upholster the alcove, French style, in padded fabric.
For the curtains, I would take a cue from Melinda's bedroom and do a generous two-tone linen swathe.
I would grab a luxurious linen bed cover from Aura or Bianca Lorenne and look for some interesting bedside tables - and maybe a dressing table, painted in a French white.
In this cold and windy weather we have in August, staying in bed is rather more tempting than usual. Recently I treated myself to some new cotton flannelette sheets, on sale of course, but all this sleeping in has got me lusting after some luxurious bedlinen from Australian designer Tracie Ellis.

Her label AURA is all about understated luxury, heavy textured fabrics and interesting details. Here are some of my favourites from the current catalogue which appeared in my mailbox recently...
