Goodbye, Wanda The Whale

I have just come in from a very sad event. A baby sperm whale we named Wanda stranded herself on the beach right in front of our cottages this afternoon. My sister, who works for National Parks, was there and my brother-in-law Mark, spent the afternoon wetting her down. Unfortunately nothing could be done to save her - she had cut herself on the rocks and was clearly in distress so the vet decided to euthenise her.
It was a wonderful thing to see the whole village out there willing her on but it seemed nature had other ideas.

  1. It's so sad. I watched it on the news and feel so sorry for her. I wonder if her mum knows?

  3. Oh, what a sad post, but it was lovely that the people in your village were there to give moral support. With all the bad news happening in our oceans these days, it is difficult to hear another sad tale.

  4. I saw a glimpse of this on the news this evening and it made me very sad. When will they find out why these creatures beach themselves? Good to know she was surrounded by people that care.

  5. How sad.... Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, mother nature has other plans.

  6. This is so sad! Maybe she was orphaned as it seems strange that a baby would come and beach herself. I guess she wouldn't have survived alone anyway - trying to reason here.

  7. Wanda was taken to the National Parks depot to have an autopsy. The Sperm whales live offshore in deep water and it could well have been that she was sick or had a birth defect as she was still of suckling age. Very sad!
