Colour Fashion: Fade to Black

It is interesting to watch the changing tides of colour fashion.
For so long we have LOVED white on white and I've been watching black and grey creep slowly in to the rooms shown in blogs and magazines.
This room (top) shows pretty much a whole room in black which looks amazing. I don't know that I could go there unless it was a small room like a library.
Do you think you could live in a black room?

  1. I have had black walls in one room of my house for years - it was our dining room and I went black above white wainscoting for a while and then I just went for it and painted the entire room black. Lots of b/w toile in there. Then it became our Library and I added black shelves and a black secretary/cabinet in there as well. So black on black and I love it during the day in the natural light AND at night with lamps on. I have never gotten tired of it. I also painted all of my upstairs bedroom doors with black chalkboard paint - we love it. It's sharp looking and fun!! So I love all white but the black on black is beautiful as well.
Just found your blog - it's great!

  2. That's an interesting observation, because both the winner of the interior design and interior decoration categories of the Aussie Interior Design Awards were DARK, DARK, DARK!

Always a pendulum thing, really, don't you think? Overuse of one thing leads to a craving for the opposite for relief.

Personally, I love the blacks and greys, but then I also love the whites too! Depends on the property.

  3. My three girls are always disappointed when I tell them my favourite colour is black... I'm sure they'd rather I said pink. I rarely wear it but am always drawn to it in decorating... love, love the top image. gxo

  4. Catherine, for me the answer is no, but I think you would have known that already.

  5. To me black is a neutral so I like a splash of black in a room. I find it can sharpen up the other colours. Amber

  7. I like splashes of black too and always with another color. The first picture is intriguing though...it works because of all the textures and warmer woods but would have to add a bit more color to the chair in the background!

  8. I don't think I could handle it even though I loved the recent article in Living Etc. about black rooms.

  9. I've had a black bathroom for about ten years (white lav and basin). It's the only room in the house I haven't got tired of. I love it. It's a wonderful room to use, though not to clean - it shows every speck of dust, every smear.

  10. I definitely think I could, I'd give it a go for sure. That top image is beautiful. I might miss the light airy feel of white though!

  11. Black really emphasizes the whole room. I love black prints. I think the black color gives essence to the room. Thanks for posting. Keep it up !
